This painting was begun on location in 1997. The reason for it was the black oaks had turned amazing colors: orange, magenta, yellow. The entire hillside flamed. I had several horses that came and went during the ensuing years. The one at the water trough changed colors several times, the one in the middle also became a different horse: and the one on the right galloped into the picture as I was finishing the painting. She was my cousin's beautiful mare who had her foal at our house, but had now gone back: It was as if she said- " I want to be in the painting, because I loved that spring grass and I belong in that painting because I will give it grace and life and a finishing touch". Well, that's how paintings go sometimes. This is a place that deserves 1,000 paintings. I hope I will be able to do some more.
